چکیده

The economic importance of effective traffic management becomes more and more evident as traffic demands increase. Faced with the negative effects of traffic congestion including higher transport costs, greater energy consumption, and increased driver delays, transportation agencies around the world areas have responded by building new roads and enhancing their traffic management systems. However, the high costs associated with these projects, and the possibility that improvements in different parts of a complex traffic management system may give rise to unforeseen interactions, have prompted many metropolitan areas to invest in the creation of metro-wide simulation systems that support the evaluation of alternative traffic management scenarios across an entire traffic network. Such undertakings are far from simple; even small-scale microscopic simulations require large amounts of high-quality data. The objectives of this project were to evaluate the feasibility of developing a traffic simulation system for the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and to propose the most appropriate methodology for the design and implementation of such a system, taking into account local needs and capabilities. Acknowledgments This report would not have been possible without the support and collaboration of a large number of people and organizations. We would like to acknowledge the support of the two project Technical Liaisons, Brian Isaacson from Mn/DOT and Robert Byers from Hennepin County. They along with the members of the Technical Advisory Panel assured that the project stayed real and that it produced useful information for the practitioners and it wasn't just another university research project. We would also like to thank Mark Filipi from the Metropolitan Council, Brian Kary from Mn/DOT, John Levin from Metro Transit and many others for their insight and guidance. Finally we would like to thank the staff of the Center for Transportation Studies for supporting the project and assisting in the publication of this report. An investigation on the social and traffic effects of metro stations on neighborhoods

Neighborhoods within the hierarchy of urban structure are one of the smallest socio-physical building blocks of cities. Traditional neighborhoods of Iranian historic cities benefited from strong social relations which were flourished over the years and were manifested in the neighborhoods centers. In the modern era, the new master plans and the complementary local plans have disintegrated th...

Constrained Controller Design for Real-time Delay Recovery in Metro Systems

This study is concerned with the real-time delay recovery problem in metro loop lines. Metro is the backbone of public transportation system in large cities. A discrete event model for traffic system of metro loop lines is derived and presented. Two effective automatic controllers, linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and model predictive controller (MPC), are used to recover train delays. A newly-...

Traffic Management Systems

This study uses regression analysis to evaluate long-run traffic management system performance. Three important traffic management systems in the Twin Cities metro area—Ramp Metering, Variable Message Signs, and Freeway Service Patrols (the Highway Helper Program) were evaluated using multiple regression models to predict link speed and incident rate. We find that ramp meters increase freeway l...

A DMB-TCA Simulation Method for On-Road Traffic Travel Demand Impact Analysis

Travel Demands influence micro-level traffic behavior, furthermore traffic states. In order to evaluate the effect of travel demands on traffic states, this paper introduces the DemandMotivation-Behaviors (DMB) micro traffic behavior analysis model which denotes that vehicles behaviors are determines by motivations that relies on traffic demands from the perspective of behavior science. For veh...

Evaluating the Effects of I-35W Bridge Collapse on Road-Users in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Region

This study evaluates the effects of I-35W bridge collapse on road-users in the TwinCities metropolitan area. We adopted the Twin-Cities (Metropolitan Minneapolis and St. Paul) Seven-County travel demand model developed in previous research, re-calibrated it against July 2007 loop detector traffic data, and used this model to carry out an evaluation of economic loss incurred by increased travel ...
